Traveling in Europe is not all about the cities and
museums. The natural beauty in Europe is worth your time and every backpacker
must take some exquisite off-the-beaten paths during her time in Europe.
Here is a list of some surreal locations in
Europe that you must visit on your next trip there. Know of other great spots
we missed? Do tell us by adding them and vote for your favorite destinations on
the list.
#1 Trolltunga – Hordaland,
Norway
Perched at almost 2,300 feet above the
Ringedalsvatnet Lake, Troltunga aka Troll’s Tongue is not for the
faint-hearted. If you are not afraid of the dizzying heights, visit for the
unbelievable view of the surrounding mountains and gorgeous lake below.
#2 Plitvice Lake National
Park – Croatia
It is Croatia’s largest national park and
one of the first natural sites classified as UNESCO World Heritage site. It is
home to 16 lakes situated in a way that they seemingly cascade off one another,
creating waterfalls that blend grays, greens, and blues effortlessly.
#3 Ice Canyon – Greenland
Nothing short of a miracle is the scene at
the Ice Canyon in Greenland where ocean runs through a glacier. The deep blue
ocean creates a striking contrast against the white of the ice. Almost makes
you forget that Greenland has its own Grand Canyon hiding underneath the ice
sheet, or that the country is technically a part of North America. Almost.
#4 Crystal Caves –
Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland
Nothing short of computer-generated
imagery, the view at Crystal Caves in Vatnajökull National Park is trippy.
Created by water or geothermal heat moving through the glacier, the icy walls
in the caves glow in gorgeous blue when sunlight penetrates through it.
#5 Tulip fields –
Netherlands
We know the Netherlands are famous for
tulip fields, but it doesn’t stop us from being completely gobsmacked the
moment we see one of them in person. To get that same colorful sight in person
we recommend visiting in April to see the tulips bloom.
#6 Point du Hoc, France
The cliff, sitting on France’s northern
coast, overlooks the English Channel, which is enough to drop your jaw. If that
is not enough, wait until you trek through numerous craters left by bombs
during World War II. As much as the walk is humbling, the view is sublime!
#7 Blue Lagoon –
Grindavik, Iceland
Another surreal spot in Iceland? Oh, yes.
The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa that’s heated by a natural hot water spring
near a lava flow (yes, lava), while silicate creates that blue coloring. Easy
to see why it’s one of the world’s most visited attractions, yes?
